Your Support Can Make a Difference

Help Jerry Farris Fight Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA)

Every donation brings comfort, care, and dignity to Jerry and his family. Your support makes a real difference in his daily battle with SMA.

About Jerry

Hello, my name is Jerry Farris, and I am 54 years old. I am living with a condition known as Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a type of muscular dystrophy. This condition has progressively weakened my muscles over the years, making everyday tasks a monumental challenge.

Despite these hardships, I am surrounded by the unwavering love and support of my dedicated caregiver, Steve, and my incredible mom, Diane. Their compassion and dedication give me strength every single day.

Living with SMA means facing daily challenges that most people take for granted. Simple tasks like getting dressed, eating, or even breathing can become difficult. But with the support of those who care about me, I continue to find joy and purpose in each day.

Your support means the world to me. Although I have insurance and medical treatments are paid for, the one thing I do not have is the ability to pay for caregivers. The hands on care is what allows me to live hour by hour and day by day. Doing simple things like getting on the toilet, being lifted into my wheelchair from the bed every morning, and from my wheelchair into my bed every night, are things that MUST be done.

Unfortunately, there are no organizations or government assistance that will pay for this. On average, caregivers charge $20 per hour and I need someone around-the-clock.

Please watch the video below. You will have a much better idea of why your support is so DESPERATELY needed for my survival!

My Daily Struggles

Why Jerry Needs Your Help

SMA is not just physically debilitating; it also comes with a significant financial burden. The specialized medical care, therapies, adaptive equipment, and treatments that Jerry needs to manage his condition and maintain his quality of life are expensive. Without adequate support, accessing these essential resources becomes incredibly challenging

Living with SMA means facing new battles each day. One of the most daunting challenges I face is the loss of my ability to protect my airways. Being on an all-liquid diet now, every sip risks traveling down the wrong path into my windpipe, leading to frequent choking and aspirating. Nights are especially difficult; as I sleep, mucus accumulates in my throat, and without the strength to cough it up on my own, I rely on diaphragm compression—someone pressing hard on my stomach while I cough to help expel the mucus.

The Need for More Caregivers

This constant need for care means that Steve and my mom are always on alert, rarely finding time for themselves. Simple things like sitting down for a meal become a luxury. Their tireless efforts are fueled by love, but the physical and emotional toll is immense. With my condition worsening, we desperately need more caregivers. However, the cost—$20 per hour—is beyond our reach. Both my mom and I are on Social Security and disability, and our combined income barely covers our basic needs, let alone the additional care I require.
